Nigel Marven is a wildlife adventurer and the main host of Prehistoric Park. His job involves traveling back in time and rescuing extinct animals from the brink of extinction.

In the series[]

T-Rex Returns[]

Nigel plans to start his adventures with an attempt to a Tyrannosaurus rex. Upon arrival in Maastrichtian Montana, Nigel heads to a forest to begin his search. He is soon able to locate a flock of Ornithomimus. While attempting to capture one by slipping a sock over its head, a small pack of T. rex arrive. Nigel escapes by running into thick undergrowth.

The next morning, the camp is visited by a herd of Triceratops. However, Nigel does not make an attempt to rescue any. Instead, he heads out into a volcanic ash field to continue his search. However, he accidentally ventures too far into a T. rex pack's territory. They leave in search of prey shortly after his arrival, eventually leading them to locate the Triceratops herd. During the ensuing attack, Nigel manages to lure a young male Triceratops into the Time Portal, hoping the attacking T. rex will follow. This plan does not work, but Nigel did manage to rescue the park's first dinosaur. He is soon named Theo, possibly as a reference to Nigel's son.

Upon his return to Cretaceous Montana, Nigel tracks a female T. rex from the pack, which was now disbanded due to the poor results of the attack. She had also been wounded by an adult Triceratops attempting to defend an infant. Nigel and his team get ahead of her and set up logs in an attempt to naturally funnel her into the time portal. They are hoping she will choose to walk through instead of simply breaking the walls. However, this plan is soon foiled by the appearance of the Ornithomimus flock. The T. rex chases them toward the time portal, which they all attempt to enter. The last one, presumably a sick individual, is caught and killed instantly. The T. rex leaves with the carcass. Nigel follows.

Eventually, the T. rex arrives at a nesting site in the mountains where her two offspring await food. The mother does not eat any of it, indicating her wound will not heal very well. However, a male T. rex soon arrives and attempts to take the carcass. A violent battle ensues, but the mother is killed at the end of it. The male leaves with his prize. Nigel, however, is presented with an opportunity to rescue the much less dangerous juveniles. But, he must do so quickly as the KT asteroid enters the atmosphere. Nigel takes out a ham sandwich, hoping the smell of meat will trigger a predatory response. This is successful, and the two T. rex juveniles enter the time portal and the safety of Prehistoric Park. They are named Terrence and Matilda.

Portrayal in series[]

Nigel is responsible for traveling back in time to collect the animals. Nigel is the architect behind Prehistoric Park and the main character in the series. Nigel's job around the park is mainly to catch the Prehistoric creatures such as Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, Ornithomimus, Woolly Mammoth, Elasmotherium, Microraptor, titanosaurs, Phorusrhacos, Smilodon, Arthropleura, Pulmonoscorpius, Meganeura, Deinosuchus and, accidentally, Troodon. Nigel is usually seen in scenes set in the past. However, he has also some memorable adventures in the park in the present. These include joining Bob for a jousting match with the Park's subadult Triceratops, when Terrence begins destroying Suzanne's veterinary clinic, and the mass break out at the end of Supercroc.

Actor[]

Nigel portrays a fictionalized version of himself in Prehistoric Park. Born in 1960, Nigel showed early promise as a budding naturalist. He was running a biopic colony at age eight and racing stick insects along his mother's clothesline by the time he was nine. In his early teens, Nigel graduated to larger creatures, keeping a caiman, magpie and boa constrictors in his parents' house. He even saved a freshwater eel from being jellied, housing it in the bathtub. When anyone needed a soak, the slippery creature was put in a bucket.

Family holidays in the Mediterranean became zoological expeditions, as young Nigel scampered over the countryside, pillowcase in hand, catching snakes and lizards for study and then release.

Once his school studies were over, Nigel took a year-out traveling throughout America, where he met hellbenders and amphibians in the wild (both are kinds of salamanders). Returning to the UK, he moved to Bristol to study Botany and Zoology at a university. This would prove to be the ideal place for him. It gave him an opportunity to pursue his interest in the natural world at an academic level as well as entering the world of wildlife filmmaking.

Trivia[]

  • Nigel revealed on his website and on Twitter that his favorite dinosaur is the Microraptor.
  • Nigel is a vegetarian, as implied in the episode Dinobirds and at other times while filming other shows.
  • On Twitter, Nigel has revealed that he would be interested in rescuing a Spinosaurus if there was another season of Prehistoric Park.
